Out of the 9 exhibition available to go and see I have been
to 6 of them and found several of the works at each site interesting, but have
decided to review and compare a video peace that was exhibited in the third
floor of water stones, and the other that was positioned at the top of the
stairs in the other book store, that also had an element of moving image to it.

I picked the first work because I liked its simplicity, it
was clear after listening to it for a bit that it was status up dates or tweets
being read out from people the artist new or had just found on the internet, with
him and the rest of the screen looking back at you, then then brick wall probably
relating to a Facebook wall, all of this making you think about what you’ve
post on social site and who’s seen it, I’m also not sure whether the webcam was
on but it connects to the idea the artist was using of all ways being watched
by those who read the posts on social media sites, and how she describes it
saying “and the screen is your only friend. I am here to turn your only friend against
you”, because I did see the webcam and think for a bit is that actually on and
is it watching me, making me not really want to stand in front of the screen
because of the uncertainty of it

I pick this work because of how much it struck me as I
walked round the corner to go up the stairs, being greeted by a head that is
larger than normal, which at times looks somewhat normal until the slid changes
again and you get the overlaying effect of the other image creating something that
looks quite disturbing and uncomfortable, and as the image changes can look
happy, angry or sad, but it also twists the face creating a sense of distortion
or the reality, which is what make up dose it changes what we would normally
see into something else. The work looks at our ideas of beauty and how there is
a class which is considered good looking which advertisers use to try and sell products
to the general public who’ll by it to be like the models.
I’m unsure as to how to compare two completely different works
of art, they both have particular elements to them that work for the idea the
artist has chosen but I don’t think would work if you swapped it around, the narrative
side of the works are somewhat more comparable, they both look at how we are perceived
by the people around us, whether that’s online or the way we look.
I find both of these work very interesting because of the execution
of the works, with the projection and the film, which both work to put across
the ideas and intentions of the artist.
